A veteran North Wales tennis player has helped Great Britain to the Super Seniors World Tennis Championship title.
Ann Brown from Prestatyn was part of the GB over-60s women’s team, which won the Alice Marble Cup in Antalya, Turkey.
A former North Wales county and Wales veterans player, she is now based in Mansfield.
“It’s a great achievement to get into the GB team, so to do so and win the championship is a huge thrill,” she said.
“In recent years, the team has always lost to the USA, either in the semi or the final, so we were delighted to take the honours this time.”
The team, captained by Pauline Fisher and also including Frances Candy and Sally Freeman, was undefeated throughout the event. Wins over Argentina, Poland, and Germany at the group stage saw them into the semi-final where they beat the Netherlands before triumphing over the USA in the final - and well-deserved gold medals all round.
“Tennis is one of the few games which can be played at a highly competitive level at all ages,” said Tennis Wales chief executive, Peter Drew. “Ann and her team-mates are proof of that. It’s a fantastic achievement to win the world title for Great Britain, and there are players in their 80s still playing at world level.”
