Year 8 Boys Regional Finals

Monday, November 17, 2014

St. Joseph's year 8 boys team were one of 4 teams that reached the Year 8 Boys Midlands Regional Finals day at Corby Tennis Centre Northamptonshire on Thursday 13.11.14, and therefore one of the last 16 school teams in the UK in this competition from an initial entry of around 600 schools.

Along with St. Joseph's year 8 girls and year 10 girls teams, they had won the Wrexham tournament, the North East Wales tournament and the North Wales tournament, and then progressed to the midlands region knockout stage, where the year 8 boys team won through to the finals day following a victory against Thomas Telford High School at Telford Tennis Centre in October.

On finals day, the team consisting of Will Hughes, Taylor Webb, Thomas Barlow and Alex Webb, played the eventual winners and number one seeded Trent College (from Nottingham) in the first round. After some hard fought rubbers played with good spirit, Trent College came out winners by a margin of 8 to 4. Unfortunately, the early morning start from Wrexham and the 3 hour car journey had taken their tole on the St.Joseph's boys (the other 3 teams were all fairly local to the venue), and a tired team were beaten into 4th place in the afternoon play-off.

A good day was had by all, with team members proud to receive their special commemorative Babaolat towels.
