The Widney Sports Tennis League, covering the South Warwickshire and District Area, awarded two important trophies recently. The first award was the “King Cup” a trophy donated by the League President Tony King from Alcester. This trophy was in recognition of the best club in 2011 and was awarded to Henley-in-Arden Tennis Club.
This “Club of the Year” trophy was awarded firstly because Henley entered two junior teams into the League’s Junior Cup competition led by junior organiser Sarah Baker who carried out her role admirably. Also, despite running three men’s teams in the summer league, the club has run efficiently and received no fines, which is a credit to their team captains Ben Summers, Max Retallack and Milan Mazic.
Praise must go to their club chairperson Judy Wilde who has throughout recent years has done an excellent job organising the club. Henley further qualified because of their thriving membership, particularly at junior level, and their general contribution to tennis. Henley A Team finished third in the Premier Division, the B Team gained promotion to Division Three after finishing runners-up in Division Four and the C Team finished mid table in Division Five. Both their Juniors teams reached the Semi-Final Play-Offs after the A Team topped Pool A and the B Team headed Pool B. This is the eighth year this award has been made with last year’s winners Moreton-in-Marsh Tennis Club handing over the trophy.
