The AEGON Classic blog has taken a different twist this year as we have been utilizing Facebook and Twitter for live updates and photos during the day’s events. However do not fret as we are still doing a blog on Warwickshiretennis.net so you won’t miss out on any of the action.
Apart from Monday we have been very lucky with the British weather as we have had little to no rain which has enabled lots of tennis to be played on the play courts and centre court. Furthermore it gave WLTA’s events the chance to go ahead on time and in full and made it that little bit nicer for the school children who were able to enjoy the free tennis sessions that little bit more. In fact at this point we have had near 1,500 school children from around the Midlands region attend the tennis zone which is great news for schools tennis!
The schools tennis zones are a great place for Primary and Secondary Schools to attend and experience free tennis coaching sessions. Once the schools have enjoyed their tennis sessions they are free to roam the grounds of the Edgbaston Priory Club and watch some of the top class women’s tennis on offer. They were in for a treat too as many of Great Britain’s top players were competing in this year’s tournament.
Below is a rundown of what all other events and sessions the WLTA team has been up to over the past few days:
Performance Challenge Results
Another event that is run each year during the AEGON Classic event is the Performance Challenge event which is where all the top clubs from Warwickshire come down to the Edgbaston Priory Club and take each other on in Mini Orange and Mini Green Matches.
As always the standard of tennis was extremely high and those watching were treated to some great matches from the stars of tomorrow. “Fair Play” was also debuted this year which is a new scheme spear headed by the LTA to promote fair play and good sporting behaviour, which all players and parents seemed to take on board as the matches were all played with a good sporting atmosphere.
On the close of play the winners and runners-up of the events were as follows:
Orange: Green:
1st: University of Warwick 1st: Edgbaston Priory
2nd: Edgbaston Priory 2nd: Virgin Active
With these results now confirmed and all clubs orange and green results added together the runners up over the two tournaments was University of Warwick which leaves the 2012 Champions as The Edgbaston Priory Club, so congratulations to them on a fabulous victory.
Regional Match:
Each year the Midlands region takes on the South East region in a match featuring some of the best junior’s from their respective tennis regions. It has been a staple in the AEGON Classic diary since 2010 with both regions having won 1 event each. The Midlands team was captained by Warwickshire Talent Performance Coordinator Claire Taylor who was in confident mood ahead of the matches as the midlands region was fielding a near full strength squad.
The results from the event are as follows:

Sabine Lisicki – Player Visit St. Peters School
St. Peters School in Birmingham had a treat this week when AEGON Classic Champion 2011 turned up to their school for a visit and to have a hit with the school kids. Warwickshire LTA Tennis Development Officer Rory McCutcheon was on hand with Sabine at the school to help and it was clear that the school children enjoyed the visits and the chance to Q&A a top class tennis professional.

Don’t forget that you can keep updated with live updates and photos on the Warwickshire LTA Facebook and Twitter pages as well as a review of the event on Warwickshiretennis.net.
