Hunt lifts Israel Open title to improve London 2012 chances

Monday, May 21, 2012
Wanborough’s Louise Hunt boosted her quest to earn direct qualification for the London 2012 Paralympics when she clinched her first women's singles title of 2012 at the Israel Open in Tel Aviv.

Hunt, who is at the Japan Open in Fukuoka this week at the last major tournament before the close of the qualification period for London 2012 on 20 May, has subsequently secured herself a world ranking back inside the top 20.

The British No. 3 went into the Israel Open world ranked No. 24 and after a first round bye she followed up an opening 6-0, 6-3 victory over French player Emilie Chene by defeating Japanese third seed and world No. 17 Yuko Okabe 6-3, 6-3.

Third seed Hunt then beat fourth seed Henriett Koosz of Austria 7-5, 6-2 in the final. The result is likely to take Hunt back towards to the fringes of the world's top 20.

Hunt capped off a great tournament teaming up with Okabe to defeat Koosz and Chene 6-1, 6-3 in the women's doubles final.
"This was a big week for me, so I'm over the moon with my first title of the season," said Hunt.

"I've had a few players rise above me in the rankings in the past few weeks and I was right on the edge of the threshold for direct qualification for London 2012, so there was a lot of pressure to pick up points and obviously I'm delighted to have achieved the best possible outcome.

"There are still over two weeks to go to the close of the qualification period and there are still plenty of points available in Japan, but I can now go over there with plenty of confidence and hopefully end the qualification period by picking up some more points."
