Wiltshire LTA are delighted to announce that Mike Powell has received a LTA Meritorious Award

Monday, October 28, 2013

Mr Powell has served tennis at club and county level for over 50 years.

He first became involved with the county as a player both at junior and senior level representing Wiltshire at a senior county level over a period of 17 years.

Not content with just playing, Mr Powell showed his enthusiasm for the game by joining the committee of his local club, Chippenham.

This led, in 1971, to Mr Powell joining the Wilts L.T.A., where his business expertise was called upon when he undertook to be Wiltshire’s Treasurer, a post that he held successfully for 21 years.

Despite his heavy workload as Treasurer, in 1983 Mr Powell also became Wiltshire’s L.T.A. Councillor, a position he held for 20 years. As Councillor he also served on the L.T.A’s Treasurer’s Committee.

During this time he took part and supported various L.T.A. initiatives, organising and refereeing Volkswagen and other ratings tournaments in the county. By the time he retired in 2004 he had been a member of the Wilts L.T.A. committee for 33 years.

Mr Powell remained loyal to grassroots tennis, taking on the chairmanship of the Chippenham and District League in 2005 and rejoining the committees of two local clubs when the need arose He stepped in as an Emergency Chairman of Chippenham in 2009/2010.

Still playing, Mr Powell has been the organiser and captain of the Wilts O65 Vets Men’s Team and now runs the O70s. He has recently agreed to accept the position as Wiltshire Veterans’ Representative.

From junior to veteran, Mr Powell has shown and is still showing a passion commitment and loyalty to tennis at all levels. Throughout all this time his service has been exemplary and the county is and remains indebted to him.
