11 June 2016

Winner and runners up from clubs all across Yorkshire and the North East of England who played in their club Quorn Family Tennis Cup gathered together at Ilkley Tennis Club on 11 June to experience a great family day out.

The day started with registration for the Quorn Family Cup event at 10.30am. 18 pairs of players took part in a fun competition, played on mini red tennis courts. The pairs were all made up of a child aged 10 or under and an adult family member. We had dads and sons, dads and daughters, grandads and grandsons, and mothers and sons all playing together.

The competition looked like it might be hampered by some damp weather, but it managed to hold off and all the matches got played without having to run for cover! They were all played in such a great spirit, and everyone came off court with smiles covering their faces.

The first part of the event comprised of 4 round robin groups of 4-5 players. The top 2 from each group then went into a compass draw. All the matches were extremely well fought out, but eventually, after some really close matches, our winners were crowned. They were John and Oliver Boddy from Yarm Tennis Club in Durham & Cleveland. The runners up on the day were Alistair and Alex Johnson of York Tennis Club.

After the event, all players went away with a goody bag and some food vouchers, and invited to stay and watch the qualifying event of the Aegon Ilkley Trophy. Some even got a chance to get some autographs from the professional players on site.

The whole event was really enjoyable for everyone involved – we can’t wait until next year!
