Britain’s best to get on court at Halton Tennis Centre - Inclusive Tennis Festival

Wednesday, August 14, 2013

Some of Britain’s top wheelchair tennis players will be taking to the court at Halton Tennis Centre to encourage people to have a go at disability tennis for free during an open day.

The activity takes place on Saturday 31st August from 1pm-6pm and junior world No.2 wheelchair tennis player Lauren Jones will be playing an exhibition match against fellow Tennis Foundation Performance Programme player and quad world No.28 Ian Payne.

There will also be games of wheelchair tennis between non-disabled players and full-time wheelchair players while professional coaches will be on hand to give advice on tennis for wheelchair users, people with visual impairments, hearing impairments and learning disabilities.

Free activities are available for anyone to get involved in the event which is supported by the Tennis Foundation, Britain’s leading tennis charity.

Tom Wood, Head of Inclusive Tennis at Halton Tennis Centre, said: “Our club wants to celebrate the success we have had in the past 12 months attracting more than 170 disables tennis players and encourage other disabled people from across the region to take up tennis.

“We aim to not only make the club totally inclusive but to promote integration into our events and daily activities – we’re a very friendly club and we think it is going to be a great day.

“I feel that after the success of the Paralympics now is the time to get people with disabilities involved in sport and Halton Tennis Centre has this process as a priority.”

There will also be a beat the coach and fastest serve competition, performance tennis, wheelchair tennis and visually impaired tennis demonstrations as well as live music, dancing and a BBQ and bar.

Halton Tennis Centre is in one of 29 Disability Tennis Networks supported by the Tennis Foundation across the country to provide more opportunities for disabled people to play tennis.
