Monday, July 29, 2013

Both senior Berkshire teams were impressively promoted from Group 3 to 2 last week! A first for the County. Results in both were very similar with 4 wins out of 5.

As so often the result of a close 5-4 win was decisive. The Ladies beating Notts on the first day with Captain Heather Bates (Royal Berks) & Claire Powell winning all 3 rubbers whi...lst Lindsey Cox-Cunningham (Royal Berks) and Hannah Brett (WIN) won 2.

Meanwhile the Men beat West of Scotland similarly 5-4 thanks to 3 wins by Andy Hamer & Marcus Willis (Wokingham) without dropping a set and 2 by Robbie Green (Royal Berks) & Neil Pauffley (Maidenhead). Captain Andrew Rogers is now aiming to reach Group 1 where Berkshire Men last appeared some 10 years ago.

Last Saturday also saw the finals of the Windsor Open Junior tournament with 3 local players starring. In the 16u girls event Kiran Dhull (WIN) with some strong serving despite a shoulder problem overcame Hampshire's Naomi Labrom. Jemma Lancaster (Maidenhead) lost to Natasha Wraith (Surrey) in the 12u girls and Angus Nicholson (Windsor) beat 4 higher ranked players to take the boys 18u title.
