FPSS tennis team unbeaten in their first rounds against Windsor Boys, Langley Grammar School and Charters, and yet to drop a set, were drawn against Edgbarrow in the county semi finals. It was a home draw for the four boys and the support from a group of Year 10’s was very much appreciated.
The final was in sight but so were 4 very tough opponents who looked strong in the warm ups. All 4 Furze Platt boys played exceptional tennis. Oliver Okonkwo had an outstanding match to beat his opponent 6 –0 and Rob Turff took no time at all to win 6-2. Charlie Pridmore, playing with a back injury, had a tough start but got stronger and stronger and won 6 –3 and Lewis Brown followed the rest of his team with a 6 –1 victory. With an 8 – 0 lead Edgbarrow played out the doubles in a true sporting spirit knowing Furze Platt had already secured their place in the final but to finish off on a high the Furze Platt team won both doubles 6- 3 , 6 –2 and were on their way with confidence, and some trepidation, to Bradfield College for the final.
The final, played on Thursday 27th June, was a long one. Oliver unfortunately lost his singles to a boy 2 years older and Robert came off court losing his first match too. Lewis and Charlie were still on court fighting hard for the 2 wins needed. Lewis came off first with a 6 –3 win and 2 points. Charlie had come back from 4 – 0 down to 5 –4 up but couldn’t quite close the match out and at 6 –6 a tie break was played which Charlie played very well and won it convincingly giving us another 2 points. So we were all level going into the doubles.
Oliver and Rob were unable to get a win from their match and although Lewis and Charlie took an early lead in their match the Bradfield boys fought back well and went into the lead. Furze Platt with some outstanding play saved a number of match points at 6 –5 and went on to force a tiebreak at 6 –6. The head coach of the 3 full-time tennis coaches watching the match complimented the boys’ play and was convinced that if they forced it to a shoot out FPSS would take it because of our strength and depth. With some very long rallies and nail biting interceptions and one lucky net cord Bradfield just pipped Furze Platt in the tie break and so won overall 8 points to 4.
Although the end of the road this year for the boys they are already looking forward to next year’s entry into the National Championships.
