The highlight of the weekend was the Derek Bone Memorial Open Mixed Doubles tournament on Monday (in memory of one Halton's tennis coaches). 24 pairs entered with players coming from all over the country – one couple travelling up from Southampton. The players were put into boxes for the intial rounds which were played in a round-robin format. The players in 5th & 6th position then went into Tableau C, 3rd & 4th to Tableau B and the winners and runners-up of each box progressed to Tableau A. Graeme Mackie & Ellen North beat Mike & Trish Hartley 6-2 to win Tableau C and Yuichi Kuya & Minori Lowis beat Peter Riddick & Bridget Andreas 6-1 to win Tableau B.
The standard of play in Tableau A was extremely high with some very competitive matches throughout. Thanks to the sponsors Kado! from Princes Risborough and Kings Farm Shop, Wendover all players in Tableau A received prize money. 8th place: Ian Cast & Emily Quin,
7th: Andy Maclean & Jacqui Wingfield, 6th: John Hinchliff & Helen Adams, 5th: Ian & Sarah Spanswick, 4th: Olly Hayes & Celia Bristow and 3rd: Nigel Matthews & Caroline Goldring.
The Final was an all-Halton affair between Alan Hutcherson & Jemima Hayward and Peter Thorne & Lereesa Easterbrook and the large crowd of spectators who had stayed on to watch the final (at least 80 people) were treated to some scintillating tennis. After a shaky start Alan and Jemima raced to a 7-4 lead and looked set to win the pro-set comfortably but Pete and Lereesa came storming back and soon were only one game adrift at 8-9, with Jemima having to serve for the match. After some amazing rallies with all four players fighting it out at net, Alan and Jemima won the game and the match 10-8. The prizes were presented by Geoff Bone (Derek's twin brother) who had travelled down from Leicestershire for the day.
