Cornwall County 9+ Under team travelled to Taunton on Saturday to compete in the LTA AEGON U9 South West County Cup.
The team Consisted of Harriet Bradley, Daisy Chapman, Joe Chappell, Louis Davey, Holly Drew, Archie Graham and Reef Leverton-Griffiths and was captained by County Coaches Tim Webster and Ryan Fern.
Training for this event started in May organised by Tim and Ryan to get the players set for what was going to be a tough Competition but one that all the players would enjoy and gain valuable experience.
First up was against our local rivals Devon who had a very strong team, after 4 matches it wall level with wins from Harriett and Holly as the Cornwall number ones Davey and Chapman who both produced some great play and put Cornwall into a 4-2 lead which left the Kernow side needing one more match which came from the Cornish Girls of Daisy and Holly to get the Cornish of to a flyer.
Dorset was next up, in this tie Cornwall produced a superb display of all court tennis particularly in the Doubles and proved too strong as they ran out a 8-1 winners, to set up a match against Somerset, this was a match that didn’t go Cornwall way after the 6 singles it was all tied with great wins from Louis, Holly and Archie, unfortunately we only picked up one more win from Louis and Archie which meant a 5-4 loss.
We knew that our final match against Channel Islands was a must win and we needed to win fairly comfortable in case of a count back to decide the final positions in the group, Joe and Archie both lost some very tight matches but produced some great play, Cornwall then won the next 4 matches with Harriett, Holly, Daisy and Louis who came away from the event unbeaten, once again this meant Cornwall needing one more win but with a count back a possibility Cornwall stepped it up to take all the 3 remaining to collect a 7-2 win. With this result if meant that the Cornish team was the fully deserved winners of the group, it was a great performance by the players who all contributed to this success and looking forward to next years events.
