Cornwall County 10U Girls team travelled to Salisbury to compete in the AEGON County Cup last weekend.  Rosie Bartlett, Ellyn Calveley and Zoe May represented the Team alongside Ryan Fern Girls County Manager.

First up was a tough match against Gloucestshire , Ellyn and Rosie competed very well against the number 1+2  but unfortunately went down in 2 sets. Zoe May came in at number 3 and played some great consistent tennis and played a very smart 3rd set tie-break to record a very deserved win to keep Cornwall in the tie, Rosie and Ellyn then teamed up to compete in the deciding Doubles against the top 2 from Gloucestshire. The Cornish pair played some great doubles and worked well as a team but found that their opponents just held their nerves on the big points and claimed the win, which meant a 3-1 loss for Cornwall.

Next up was against the very strong team Wiltshire, Cornwall kept the same team but unfortunately we found them slightly too strong and came away with a 4-0 loss, Wiltshire went on to win the group.

Our Final match was against our local rivals Devon, Zoe played at number 3 and made a great start and won the 1st set 4-2 with some fine play, Devon number 3 came back strong and won the 2nd set 4-1 to take the match into a deciding 3rd set, both girls played their part but unfortunately Devon picked up the 3rd set in the match tie-break. Cornwall number 2 Rosie was next up, after a slow start Rosie dropped the 1 set 4-0 but soon found her range and won some very aggressive rallies and won the second set in a tie-break to force a 3rd set decider, once again the rallies was long and hard but Rosie dug deep and took the Match-Tie break 10-7 to get Cornwall back on level terms. Last up was Cornwall’s number one Ellyn against the Devon’s number one Emily Sims both players played their part in a very high standard match with some fine hitting and big serving especially from Ellyn unfortunately the Devon player just had the edge and recorded a two set win.

Calveley and Bartlett teamed up in the doubles to play a must win to keep the tie alive after some great attacking play from both pairs the Devon pair played the bigger points very well and recorded a 4-1 4-1 to take the win for Devon.

All the girls enjoyed the week and have learnt so much and looking forward to next years competition.
