Lewisham Annual year 3&4 Mini Tennis Festival

Sydenham Tennis Club held our annual Year 3 & 4 Mini Tennis competition on Tuesday 3rd June.

It was another successful morning of tennis with 16 schools taking part from across Lewisham.

Tournament Organiser Tina Descombes, with assistant Glen Burt, were busy recording all the results as 4 players from each school played Timed Tennis on mini red courts.  Tennis Leaders trained up at Haberdasher's Askes' Knights Academy umpired the matches and helped some of the players with the rules and their positioning on court.

There was real improvement in the level of play, thanks to Sydenham coaches Chris and Michael, who had been going into local schools to deliver tennis over the past year.  This really made the morning more enjoyable for the players, as the rallies were longer and the matches were much closer.

Tournament Referee Phil Layfield kept the matches going with the help of Official timer Adele Modeste.  Although play was stopped a few times for rain, all 3 round robin box leagues were completed.  The results were as follows:

Winner of Round Robin A = Rathfern

Winner of Round Robin B = Dalmain

Winner of Round Robin C = Kelvin Grove

Best placed runner up = Fairlawn

The semi finals saw Kelvin Grove beat Fairlawn 3-1 and Dalmain beat Rathfern on points after finishing 2-2 in matches.

The 3rd and 4th place play-off saw Fairlawn beat Rathfern 3-1.

The final saw Kelvin Grove beat Dalmain 3-1.

The standard of play in the latter stages of the competition was extremely high and all the matches were very close.

Well done to all schools who took part and congratulations to our finalists.  Kelvin Grove will now represent Lewisham in the upcoming London Youth Games.  Good luck!

Thank you to all the people involved on the day who made it so successful.  It really is one of the highlights of the year for the schools.  I hope you like the picture of all the players and Tennis Leaders who took part on the day.

Tournament Referee Phil Layfield.
