Ladies 50's Report from the Inter County Finals 2012
Kent v Essex
Playing on one court, the no 2 singles players started the days play, with Jane Gentle against Pat Wire, Jane played some fine tennis but was unable to match the vast experience of Pat and lost in two sets but after an hour and a half of honest endeavour. The no 1's followed with Hazel Lindfield taking on Libby Eden, at one set all, a 10 point tie break was played, at 8 all it was anybodies, but Libby held strong and came through the winner 10-8. So now 2-0 down our doubles pair of Sally Holmes and Sarah Van Doren entered the fray, needing to win to keep the match alive, and win they did two sets to love.
With other matches already finished we were able to get both the remaining doubles played almost together, as time was ticking away. We needed both doubles of course, so Hazel was joined by Sue Wandless to play their doubles pair and we were a set and 3-0 up when Sally and Sarah eventually succumbed to Pat and Libby, but not before giving them one hell of a scare by racing to a 5-2 lead in the first set. But Essex have been champions for many years and that experience held them in good stead.
We felt we gave them a good run for their money and feel the experience we have gained will only be good for us. It was a very enjoyable weekend, and put a nice finishing touch to a very successful season.
