Tennis Coaching - a big hit in Somerton!

Monday, May 16, 2011

Somerton Tennis Club introduced a 'Learn to Play' tennis coaching session last month and it has proved to be a big success. The club thought that providing adult coaching sessions in the area would attract some interest, after all although the schools provide opportunities for children, there are fewer opportunities for adults to learn or simply improve their game.

Initially the club ran a 12-week, Saturday morning course but the response surprised them. It was so over-subscribed that they added a second coaching session - which is now full as well.  "It's been great" said Debbie Hill. "I hadn't picked up a racket for years. I've wanted to get back into playing for so long, but didn't know where to start. To my surprise, when I got here the majority of the people on the course were in exactly the same situation".

The club are anxious not to lose the momentum of that initial success. Many occasional players find that their old racquet isn't quite up to the modern game or simply is wrong for them so they are running a 'Try a Racquet' session at 10.30am on Sunday 22 May, where people can come and try a selection of tennis rackets for all abilities, ages and budgets. There's no obligation to buy - it's not a sales pitch purely a chance to try out different rackets. However if anyone is interested in a racket after the event Somerton Tennis Club have negotiated a discount for members if they purchase a racket at Tony Pryce Sports. Somerton Tennis Club's Secretary, Bridget Hodsman said "We are going to be opening the club to non-members more and more this year and offering some fantastic tennis activities".
