Axbridge win schools tennis for third year running

Wednesday, May 29, 2013

Axbridge First School won the Cheddar Valley year 4 mini red schools tennis tournament for the third year running and will now represent the district at the county finals at Millfield school in July.

The mini red tournament, organised by Cheddar tennis club, is one of the LTA’s events to encourage children to try tennis and is aimed particularly at those who have not had a lot of coaching.  In addition to Axbridge, Cheddar first school, Weare first school and Sidcot also took part.  Each school sent a year 3 and a year 4 team, with two boys and girls in each team.

Watched by a large and enthusiastic crowd of parents and staff, the children played singles and doubles matches against the other three schools in their year group.  The final result was a triumph for Axbridge, but all the schools can be very proud of their players because Weare were runners-up in the year 4 event, with Sidcot year 3 winners and Cheddar runners-up, and everyone enjoyed the tournament.  As well as trophies for the winners, both winners and runners-up were presented with medals and all the children received certificates for taking part.

Cheddar club coach Stephen Pearce was thanked for organising the tournament.  Junior coaching continues after half term at Cheddar tennis club on Fridays after school and on Saturday mornings.  For more information contact Lynne Cornish 01934 950402 or Sophie Richards 01934 741362.
