Gabb reaches final of ITF Pro Series Greece F8

Friday, May 31, 2013

Somerset star Richard Gabb has been in fine form in 2013 and he doesn’t look like stopping just yet after reaching the final of the singles event of the ITF Futures event in Marathon, Greece.

Whilst having a lot of success in the doubles events on tour this year, Gabb has recently begun progressing further in the singles events as well. He dropped just one set on his way to the final but was unable to make it five wins in a row as he was beaten by fellow Briton David Rice in an excruciatingly close three setter; 7-5, 4-6, 7-6(5).

In the first round he beat Efthimios Efthimiadis, Australia, 6-4, 7-5 before winning 6-3, 6-3 against France’s Jordan Ubiergo in the second round. Gabb had a tough match in the quarter-finals as he came from a set down to win thanks to a close tie-break in the third set. He won 6-7(3), 6-1, 7-6(7) to progress to the semi-finals.

In the last four, he played out a close match against Canadian Filip Peliwo. The pair could only be separated by a solitary break of serve in each set as Gabb won 6-4, 6-4 to reach the final.

Gabb, who calls Street home, has now returned to inside the top 700 ranked singles players in the world (668) and is approaching his career-best standing of no.659 which he achieved earlier this month.
