Suffolk Men’s Captain Jeremy Cowley’s passion and enthusiasm for the game was seen in abundance as the Framlingham Tournament was safely concluded at the College on Saturday, Cowley achieving the capture of all 5 titles for the third time. His 6-4 6-1 victory over his luckless doubles partner Matt Hough again merely served to emphasise the outstanding form displayed by Cowley for both Club and County this past year. Conversely, the stylish Lydia Green finished an outstanding tournament as runner-up in all 5 events she entered, losing out to anxious Norwich City supporter and defending champion Olivia Nicholls 6-1 6-1 in the Open Ladies’ Singles decider. Although now working hard to improve her game as an adult in France, Miss Green is in fact still a junior, and hopefully she will put this year down to experience, and look forward to undoubted success in the future.
Norfolk county player Olivia Nicholls overwhelmed Suffolk’s Kitty McWhirter in the 18U Girls’ Singles, her mother completing the family success in partnering LTA East Development Manager Karen Woodrow to win the Veteran Ladies’ 40 and Over Doubles. Miss McWhirter also finished as runner-up in the 16U Singles to arch rival Ella Monsey, Miss Monsey emphasising her future potential in also capturing the 14U Girls’ Singles in beating Hannah Vickers.
New-look Robert Camplin defeated club colleague Rohan Abel 6-3 6-3 to capture the Boys’ Singles 16U title, though he was unable to complete the double in the 18Us, losing out to Cambridgeshire’s James Morris. Great Britain 12U number one Luke Hammond was dominant in both the 14U and 12U Boys’ Singles overwhelming Russian visitor Boris Ivanyuzhenkov in the 12U, but given a much more severe test by Max Darrington in the 14U decider.
Former Suffolk Champion Ian Moore put up a good fight in the Veteran Men’s Singles Over 45, though was just beaten 6-2 5-7 6-3 by the athletic Paul Hammond. Mark Peters defeated Brian Brown to retain his 55 and Over Singles title, Mike Ellis likewise retaining his 65 and Over crown. The Veteran Ladies’ Singles titles went to Julie Sexton (Over 40) and regular Tournament visitor Mellony Milner in the Over 50.
Despite persistent rain which wiped out any grasscourt play on Thursday, causing the postponement of the Suffolk Closed Finals, all 47 Senior, Junior and Veteran events were eventually completed. The trophies were presented by Tournament President Norman Woodcock, who thanked the College for the use of their superb facilities once again.
Another memorable week for all players, with some superb, sporting tennis, together with that special Fram comraderie.
