We are in one of the more unusual times of the year at the moment as the main coaching program is on a break for the summer holidays. This means that the daily groups coaching is suspended while the keener, more competitive players travel around the county visiting events such as Culford, Framlingham, Felixstowe and Ipswich.
These annual events are a popular fixture of the tennis calendar and we encourage as many players as possible, both junior & senior, to enter. Without continued support from all clubs at a grass routes level these great institutions will lose their magic and appeal. I won’t be playing as much this summer but will be visiting the tournaments to see how our home players get on and to offer advice when needed. Probably when not needed as well.
The Summer league teams have finished their long schedule of matches and several of them are hopeful of promotion for next season. I can’t remember a season when so many of the captains have reported such a good run of results. A great deal of time and effort goes into running a team and juggling players while keeping most of them as content as possible. An impossible task so huge thanks to those willing to sacrifice their time on behalf of the club.
The annual club tournament for juniors and seniors, with it’s 14th Sept finals day, is gradually nearing completion. All of the events seem to be progressing satisfactorily with only the occasional match falling behind. It’s wonderful to see some new names entering the events and some new names reaching the semi-finals. There have been some unexpected results along the way so all looks good for a compelling, exciting day of tennis in early September.
As ever, the Summer camps are full with lots of eager little faces waiting to hear the latest dreadful jokes from me, and maybe learn some tennis along the way. This year marked a return of the famous ’10 seconds to make the best raspberry noise you can’ contest which, I am delighted to say, was an easy win for me. With one more week of camp to go, I am sure the next batch of children will have just as much fun.
The new Cardio tennis class is proving to be a real hit so, if you’d like to get fit and have fun at the same time, you know who to call! Music, heart rate monitors, and dozens of balls to hit make this a great way of getting out of the gym and into a fun, sociable sport.
