Haverhill Tennis Club entered four boys team in the Suffolk Winter League. The boys aged 11 to 18 had some very close matches against Culford, Wortham, Lavenham, Red Lodge, A and M Tennis Club and Risbygate but somehow managed to win every match! This meant that all the Haverhill teams would play in the county finals at Ipswich. The day started with the 12U singles against Woodbridge and U14 doubles against Ipswich Sports Club. Luke Marsh (12U) played a great match but was beaten in 2 sets, but Thomas (12U) managed to come back from one set down to win. This meant the match would be decided by the doubles. Although Haverhill played some great tennis Woodbridge’s number one player was too strong for our boys. This was the same in the 14U’s where Freddie Holmes and Andreas Kitsis played some great tennis. Both singles matches went down to the tie break but this time Ipswich won the match. At 3pm the 16U team of Sam Howard and Sam McDonald started their singles against Wortham. Harry Sendall and Tom Marsh playing for the 18U team started their doubles match against A and M Tennis. This time we would win all 3 matches, Sam McDonald won quite easy even though he was down in the second set but Sam Howard had to work hard in the second set to finish off the match. Sam Howard played some incredible points, turning round several points and hitting some great passing shots. The 18U doubles was a very close match but some superb volleying from Harry and Tom saw them through. The 16U boys won the doubles quite convincingly to add the 16U title to the 14U they had won the year before. The 18U singles matches were shared with Tom winning and Harry losing but after the doubles win this meant we had won the match 2-1. The event started at 12 O’Clock and finished about 6pm in the evening. The day was a fantastic advert for tennis with the organiser commenting on the fairness of all the players’ line calling and attitude when playing. Haverhill was the only team to be represented in all of the junior finals and we won 2 and lost 2. Haverhill Coach, Robert Jeffs put the success down to the player’s hard work in training and the support given from parents.
12 Under team members were Luke Marsh, Thomas Parrett and Rio Cooper, 14U Team Andreas Kitsis, Freddie Holmes, Jayden Bayford, Greg Birch, 16U team Sam Howard, Sam McDonald, Aaron Thorne. 18U team Tom Marsh, Harry Sendall, Gratz Senn and Aaron Thorne.
