The Abedare/Glanville Cup held ay Sheffield involes both state and private schools from across the whole of Great Britain. Although it is an U.19 event, Culford School had an extremely young team in the Abedare Cup, with Hannah Vickers, 13 years old, Maria Andrews, 14 years old, Daniella Silva, 16 years old and Charlotte Harpur, 18 years old. The team were unseeded but had a fantastic tournament defeating the number 2 seeds, Stroud High School in the first round 8-2. In the following match, the team defeated Peter Symonds School 8-0 and following this in the semi finals, they defeated the number 3 seeds Talbot Heath in a very tight match which went to a tie break shoot out after the rubbers were tied at 3-3. In the final, Culford narrowly lost to Queenswood School and were a real credit to themselves and Culford School. The girls all played to an incredibly high standard and the team spirit, fighting attitude, professionalism and togetherness were there in abundance for everyone to see.
The boys also did very well to also qualify for the National finals in the Glanville Cup. The team consisted of Toby Cutting, Kazimieras Zakaitis, Joseph Matta and Ewan Evans. They were handed a very difficult first round match against Reeds School, who won the whole tournament without losing a single match. However, in the backwards draw the boys competed strongly and finished up a very creditable 10th position out of 16 Schools. The 4 boys in the Culford team will all still be at Culford School next year, which is extremely exciting and the future is certainly bright.
Culford school also competed in the IAPS National Finals on the16th-18th July held at Queenswood School. Abigail Callaghan and Anastasia Mozhina performed extremely well in winning the U.14 doubles National Title, beating Brandeston Hall, 6-4 in the final. The U.14 boys, Edward Pomeroy and Oscar Cutting also played very strongly in winning the National Title, defeating Highfield School, 6-0 in the final. Oscar Cutting also had 2 match points to win the U.14 boys singles National Title but unfortunately bowed out 7-6 in the final. Rose Thomas also made the final of the U.12 girls National singles event. Overall, yet another very successful National tournament! Other players involved in the event who gained fantastic experience: Joseph Gollifer, Joe Foulger, Polina and Seb Woods.
