This week saw over 1000 primary aged children enjoying free, fun taster tennis sessions at their primary schools! All thanks to the new Suffolk Youth Tennis Fund, supporting the development of U19 tennis across the county.
This ‘Suffolk Schools Tennis Roadshow’ has been funded by the SYTF, aimed at primary children it is part of a national scheme pioneered by the Tennis Foundation and Cross Sports, designed to get more children playing tennis in local clubs. It has been hugely successful with hundreds of children joining clubs!
Five Tennis Clubs: Haverhill, Kesgrave, Saxmundham, Woodbridge and Wortham, have been working with Cross Sports running introductory sessions in their local primary schools. The children really enjoyed the fun activities receiving a certificate, as well as an invite to attend their local tennis club’s Open Day this weekend.
Josh Slade, PE Coordinator at Rendlesham Primary School said of the Roadshow, ‘Tennis provides the children with a different opportunity and skill set. This is a great chance for the children to experience fun tennis in school and in a local club setting.’
Emily Wharton, Head Coach at Wortham Tennis Club, said, ‘the Schools Tennis Roadshow is a fun way to showcase our sport and grow the game at grassroots. Being part of the Roadshow has allowed us reach out to new schools in the area and children who otherwise may not get this opportunity, to hopefully give our club an injection of new players from the links made this week.’
Children from over 50 schools have been invited to the free club sessions. All children between 3 and 10 are welcome, so please bring your children along to enjoy tennis games, rallies and inflatable activities! The children will also receive a discounted offer for further tennis should they wish to continue playing tennis.
