This weekend is an important one for both our Senior County Teams, as our Men and Ladies’ do battle in the nationwide Aegon Winter County Cup competition. Suffolk Men have been hit by last-minute injuries to captain Jeremy Cowley and Matt Kirby, but after their superb effort in the Summer by securing promotion to Group 2, they’re hungry to start setting records in the Winter by moving up to Group 3, a feat never achieved by Suffolk before.
Suffolk Men field a young side, with all the team under 25, except for their 29 year-old inspirational captain Cowley, and should be looking to finish Ist or 2nd in Group 4 at Newport, though it looks as if injuries may play a part. Joining Cowley in a strong-looking squad are Ben Smith, Myles Orton, Matt Kirby, Matt Hough, Paul Midgley and Eliot Street.
With Singles a crucial part of the format as well as Doubles, the Winter County Cup is an ideal platform for giving the youngsters much-needed competitive experience at a high level, and Suffolk Ladies certainly do just that. A team of Lysette Fulcher, Troi Baxter, Kari Sherington, Elie Stevens, Francesca Ridley and Kim Percy make the long trip to Sunderland to compete in Group 6.
