From the Suffolk LTA Chairman, Mike Watling - "Are you inspired?"
What an eventful Summer we have just had. Nationally the Olympics has inspired us all, with the added bonus of Andy Murray winning Gold + Silver medals being the highlight for all of us tennis followers, leading on that defeat of Novak Djokovic in the US Open to capture his first Grand Slam title.
The following are highlights of a successful Summer for the county:
Suffolk Men retained their Group 2 status, and Suffolk Ladies’ 35.Over won all their matches at Eastbourne to achieve promotion.
Myles Orton captured the East of England title, and reached both Singles Finals at Framlingham. Matt Hough won the Suffolk Men’s title for the first time, Katie Tassell wiining the Ladies’ event for a record-making ninth time. Summer tournaments were successfully completed, the circuit being concluded with the Suffolk Closed, where James Ling climaxed a fine run of victories over the Summer in the 18 and 16 categories, and Hannah Vickers completed the 16/14 double in the Girls.
A much better supported Inter-Club Doubles at Felixtowe saw Newmarket Ladies retaining their title and the Ipswich Sports Club victorious in the Men’s competition. The Plate titles went to Roundwood Men and Sproughton Ladies. A great day’s tennis for all !
Two notable milestones for Suffolk Clubs saw Exning celebrating their 60th year and the Sports Club their 65th anniversary.Congratulations to both clubs, and especially to all those committee members over the years who have kept them going so well.
What better time to attract more people to take up the beautiful game ?
The Suffolk LTA team will be eagerly working on projects and offering their services to assist clubs wherever possible, with Cluster Group meetings once again to be held over the coming months.
