At the time of writing a rare event has occurred- for the first time since 2005 we have a Grand Slam men’s final without either Federer, Djokovic or Nadal. Take a few seconds to mull this over and you may register just how long it is since you can recall a final without them. We’ve had a few players that have troubled the top 3 but they really have had a strangle-hold over the game for the last decade. Are the new players coming through? Yes, certainly, but I can’t imagine that the dominant elite will relinquish their hold without a fight.
Speaking of elite players, on Sunday 14th September the club held the annual finals day. Many top seniors and juniors played the final, decisive matches in what has been a summer-long campaign for trophies and glory. It has been encouraging to see new junior and senior names not only entering the various events, but reaching the final stages as well. A good example of new blood getting involved with the club and enjoying the fruits of hard work and quality practise.
A big ‘Well done’ to all the under 14 boys who represented the club in this years Aegon Summer Tennis league. The team, consisting of 4 players for each fixture, used a total of 6 boys to fulfil the matches and were unbeaten to win Division 2. Excellent work and well done once again.
As the summer break is well behind us, and the schools are back in session, the main tennis program is also in full swing. As ever there are different sessions suited to players of every age and ability so whether it’s a fitness class on court or an under 8’s fun group there will be something for everyone. With most of the starter groups no previous tennis experience is required and rackets can be provided before you commit to buying your own.
