Hunt leads GB to World Team Cup semi-finals

Thursday, April 28, 2011

Wanborough wheelchair tennis player Louise Hunt chalked Great Britain's first point on the board during Wednesday's women's quarter-finals at the ITF World Team Cup in Pretoria, South Africa en route to a 3-0 win over the USA that has sealed a place in Friday's semi-finals.

Nineteen-year-old British No 3 Hunt, who is playing as Britain's number two nominated singles player for the first time in the women's event this week, led Dana Mathewson 5-4 in the first set of Great Britain's first singles rubber against the Americans before Mathewson was forced to retire.

Hunt's team mate Jordanne Whiley then secured a three set victory in the second singles rubber to put the tie beyond the USA, with the doubles rubber in the Davis and Fed Cup-style competition subsequently remaining unplayed.

University of Bath student Hunt and Whiley have now secured Great Britain's place in the women's semi-finals for the third successive year, having being part of the team that were runners-up in 2009 before finishing fourth last year.

Third seeds Great Britain play second seeds Germany in Friday's semi-finals as Hunt and Whiley bid to put Britain in the women's final for just the second time in the event's 27-year history.
