Volunteer of the Year for the South East – Rob Walter

Thursday, November 24, 2011

The winners of the 2011 British Tennis Awards were presented with their trophies at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals at The O2 arena on Wednesday 23rd November by the LTA Honorary President, Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Gloucester.

Rob Walter, Chariman, of Shinfield Tennis Club was among the Volunteers of the Year in the seven different regions presented with their trophies.

Over the past two years Rob has made a huge difference to the club.   The club has more than tripled its membership, now at just under 200 and still growing.   A Head Coach was appointed who recruited additional licensed coaches to deliver the programme which now caters for both adults, juniors, and links to local primary schools in the area.

In Sept 2011 the club was awarded Tennis Clubmark and now plan to tackle improving facilities which include a leaky garage for a clubhouse!

Rob has really proved that with the right attitude and approach even a “small” club with limited resources can grow the game in the local community.
