Marcus Willis win Glasgow title

Monday, January 21, 2013

Berkshire’s 22 year old Marcus Willis had a week to remember in Glasgow recently winning the Pro Series event from a strong field. Left handed Marcus only got into the tournament on a wild card but demolished the opposition with victories over 2 higher ranked foreign visitors Julien Obrey (France) and C.Harrison (USA) to reach the semi-final.

Here he met Britain’s No.5 Dan Evans beating him in straight sets and then in the final Britain’s No.4 Josh Goodall (6-4, 6-4). A break in each set secured victory for Willis over top seed Goodall, a past champion in Glasgow. Both of the latter two have played Davis Cup in recent years so Willis’s win may bring him into contention during 2013.

Along with runner-up Goodall, Willis now moves on to the Aegon GB Pro-Series in Preston where he has been awarded a wild card into the main draw.

Marcus spent his junior years training at Bisham Abbey under Victor Rubanov and it may be at last that he is fulfilling his talent at the senior level.
