Kent Winter Red (8 & Under) County Closed Events Report

On Saturday 16th February, 42 8 & under boys from across Kent descended upon Bromley Tennis Centre to participate in the Kent Winter Red Boys County Closed Event.

It was an afternoon of fantastic tennis with a number of closely contested matches. The boys competed in 10 round robin boxes, with the winners of the boxes and the next 6 highest placed going into a 16-player compass draw. Those not lucky enough to get through went into a compass draw and round robin box for extra matches.

In a closely fought and exciting boy’s final, Hugo Coquelin (West Heath Tennis Centre) overcame the resistance of Timothy Viding (Gravesham Lawn Tennis Club).

On Sunday 17th February, 33 girls arrived at Bromley Tennis Centre to play in the Kent Winter Red Girls County Closed Event. The girls competed in 8 round robin boxes which led to a 16 player compass draw for the winner and runner up of each box. There were also 4 further round robin boxes for those who were not lucky enough to make it into the compass draw.

In the girl’s final another great match took place between Daisy Carpenter (Bromley Tennis Centre) and Hannah Smith (Canterbury Indoor Tennis Centre) with Daisy emerging as the victor.

The girl’s consolation winner was Helen Coomber (Tunbridge Wells Sports Centre) and the boy’s consolation winner was Angus Howard (The Parklangley Club).

The referee Susan Finch said, ‘I saw great tennis, lovely parents and children and I hope to be asked to referee it again next year. I was very lucky to have some great leaders and I’d like to thank Austin for presenting the trophies.’

Tudor Rowe, Kent Tennis Development manager said ‘Overall the standard of tennis over the two events was very high and the matches were played in a competitive yet friendly manner. The events were extremely well run and it certainly looked like everyone enjoyed their experience.’

Well done to everyone involved and a special thank you goes to Susan Finch and Siobhan Butler for running the events so well, to all the leaders who supported the smooth running of the events, the Bromley Tennis Centre staff who were friendly and helpful, Austin Smith – The President of Kent County Lawn Tennis Association for presenting the trophies, the parents and coaches who make these events happen and last but not least the players, who all put in a great effort on the day and should be really proud of their performance!

We would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a very successful summer!
