Suffolk's U10 boys and girls tennis teams played in the AEGON County Cup event between Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Essex and Norfolk over the weekend of 6 and 7 June 2009.
The girls team of Nia Braidford, Florence McCausland and Florence Kenworthy played at Riverside LTC in Bedfordshire. Unfortunately due to inclement weather the format was shortened to singles matches only with one short set to 4 games and sudden death deuce. The girls put in a strong performance against Norfolk winning all their rubbers however they were soundly beaten by the eventual champions Essex and finished 4th overall.
The boys team comprising of William Cooke Wharton, Jonathon Simmonds, Seth Mayhew and Gabriel Watson played some very competitive tennis at Hills Road Sports & Tennis Centre in Cambridge. The team comprehensively beat Bedfordshire 8-0 on the first day. Next up were Cambridgeshire. Both Jonathon and Seth lost their singles rubbers but William managed to defeat Cambridgeshire's no. 1 player Matthew Mitcham in a thrilling match, with William eventually battling through to win 5-4, 5-3. Unfortunately in the deciding doubles match, William and Jonathon went down 5-3, 5-3 resulting in a 6-2 loss to Cambridgeshire.
On day 2, the boys played Essex who were just too strong and had too much depth for the team, resulting in an 8-0 victory for Essex. A special mention should go to Gabriel in this match since he fought extremely hard and was unfortunate to lose in a nail biting tie-break.
The final match came against Norfolk, where William played in the match of the tournament which saw him comprehensively defeat one of the top ranked player in the country, William Davies 4-2. Jonathon was unable to win his match but Gabriel secured an easy victory resulting in a deciding doubles to be played. William and Jonathon played some fine tennis but unfortunately were defeated 4-2. Team captan Marc Powell said "overall, although the team finished in 4th place there were many close matches and the boys were competitive throughout".
