On May 30th six local Primary Schools attended a Y3/4 mini tennis tournament. This was held at Haverhill Tennis Club and was organised as part of the County School Games. Clements, Coupals, New Cangle, Wickhambrook, Hundon, and Kedington each brought a team of 4 players -2 boys and 2 girls.
Mini Tennis is an adapted version of the real game and aims to give children a taste of tennis on a shortened court and with a smaller net. Players move across the court to serve and to receive a serve, have rallying practice and score using the tie break system.
After a warm up the schools were put into two leagues where children played their counterparts in other schools. Results of individual matches were recorded and from that a team score was found.
Coupals, Hundon, Kedington and Clements made it through to the semi – finals. There were some close games, particularly between Clements and Coupals where the final result was two games all. Individual points were then counted and Coupals came out the winners. They went on to play Kedington in the final.
The eventual winners after some very accurate and exciting tennis were Coupals. They will be invited to the County Finals in Bury St Edmunds on July 6th.
9 Young Leader students from Samuel Ward competently managed all the games, helped the young players with match play and scored. Many thanks to who Robert Jeffs of Haverhill Tennis Club who shared his expertise and ensured everything ran smoothly.
