Double title delight for Morsi & Swan

The Avon Junior County Closed tournament, held at Coombe Dingle Sports Complex, Bristol, produced a fantastic week of tennis.

There were outstanding performances from Mohammed Morsi who won both the 16 & Under and 18 & Under titles in the Boys Singles events and from Katie Swan who, at only 11 yrs of age,  won both the 14 & Under and 16 & Under Girls Singles. Morsi was seeded No1 in the 16&U age group and had a relatively straightforward passage to the final where he overcame Ed Hardiman (David Lloyd Club) in straight sets. The 18&U event proved a harder task and it took a tie break in the 3rd set for him to beat fellow University of Bath T. C. player Julian Page 6-4, 0-6, 7-6 (1). Katie Swan (David Lloyd Club) faced Laura Sainsbury (Coombe Dingle T C) in the finals of both events with the girls producing tennis of real quality in both matches, Sainsbury pushing Swan to a tight 3 sets in their second match of the day before Swan took it 2-6, 6-4, 6-3.

Henry Mullan had a good week with a victory over Alex Day in the 14 & Under Boys Singles which was followed by the 14 & Under Doubles title when he joined forces with Kristian Newman to win that event as well.

In the 12&U Boys and Girls events the seeded players came through both draws with the no 1 seed beating the no 2 seed in both finals. Declan Moran (David Lloyd Club) beat Aydin Caglayan (Coombe Dingle T C) 6-1 7-5 while Stephanie Allen (Coombe Dingle T C) beat Lizzie Burton (Kings LTC) 6-2, 6-0.

Players had to battle both strong wind and rain throughout the week and the 10 & Under events were only saved by the generosity of David Lloyd Bristol who provided indoor courts for the event at very short notice. Jo Partridge was the Boys 10&U winner with Jack Bunn the Runner Up. Claudia Hallsworth won the 10&U Girls Singles with India Britland the Runner Up.

The sun eventually shone on finals day when trophies were presented by Avon LTA County President, Olive Brown and County Chairman, Tony Barker.
