THIS year’s British success at Wimbledon has inspired scores of youngsters in Winterbourne.
An annual summer tennis club has seen unprecedented numbers of children apply for a place and coaches believe it down to Andy Murray’s success on centre court.
The holiday course, at Winterbourne Tennis Club, this year saw 50 children aged between four and 13 learn how to serve and rally.
Club chairman and head coach John Williams said: “Following the Wimbledon success of Andy Murray and Laura Robson, the increase in interest has been unprecedented.
“We have eight young tennis coaching assistants helping out too. They are all tennis players at Winterbourne Tennis Club who have been encouraged to take their coaching awards.”
Winterbourne Parish Council and the tennis club are helping the teenagers complete their coaching course with financial assistance.
Added Mr Williams: “I believe that within our community the tennis club is a real beacon of success with the youth in our community.”
