Backwell School Qualify for the AEGON Team Tennis National Schools Finals

Friday, December 04, 2009

Backwell School's Year 8 Boys have won the Wales and South West AEGON Schools Finals to qualify for the National Finals in Bolton.

Finian Bedwell, Jimmy Hardiman, Kristian Newman and James Harwood representing Backwell School, beat off stiff opposition in the Regional Finals to qualify for the National Finals on 5th & 6th December 2009.  This was the culmination of many matches played since April 2009 and the boys did not drop a fixture.  A fantastic achievement.

There was some excellent tennis on show and the boys thoroughly deserved the win.  Kristian, Jimmy and James won all of their singles with Kristian and Jimmy also winning both of their doubles matches.

Now off to Bolton, which for Jimmy and Kristian will be the second time this year they have been there for a National Final.  The first being County Cup where they finished as runners-up.

The opposition and the schools final will be very tough with Reeds being the favourites.  However it is a round robin event and only one set matches so anything could happen on the day.

Thanks go to Paul Stephens (Head of Sport Backwell) for getting a team together and to Mr Baldwin (Head) for allowing the time off school to compete!!

Good luck lads and keep the Backwell School flag flying.
