Avon Team: Amy Leather, Eleanor Nobbs, Katya Saint, Jessica Peace
Captain: Thaddea Lock
The Avon Under 12 girls team travelled to Devizes for their weekend of County Cup Qualifying. The girls were drawn in a box with Cornwall and Wiltshire.
On day 1 the team got off to a strong start against Cornwall winning 4-0. Eleanor Nobbs, Katya Saint and Amy Leather all had convincing wins against their respective opponents in singles. Jessica Peace and Katya Saint cemented the victory with a dominant performance in the doubles.
The match against Wiltshire proved to be a tougher contest. Despite great efforts by Eleanor, Katya and Amy, Wiltshire went 3-0 up after singles play. Wiltshire went on to win the doubles against Eleanor and Amy 17-15 in the 3rd set match tie break, taking them to a 4-0 victory over us. This meant Avon finished 2nd in the box and went through to play Gloucestershire in the semi final play off on Sunday morning.
Due to a rain delay, the referee made the decision to not play the doubles, only the 3 singles matches. The girls competed brilliantly in very slippery conditions. After 3 very close matches Avon came out 1-2 with Amy winning at 3 and Eleanor and Katya marginally beaten at 1 and 2.
Avon then played Somerset in the 3rd/4th play off match losing in a heartbreaking tie break shoot out after the matches stood at 2-2 after singles and doubles play.
A big well done to the 4 girls, Eleanor Nobbs, Katya Saint, Amy Leather and Jessica Peace for a fun, well competed weekend of tennis.
