The weekend began with a perfect drive to Newquay with no holiday traffic, thanks to the predicted bad weather!!! The girls were in great spirits and had a great practice at the location on Friday night before dinner.
Day 1 was a longer day taking on Cornwall to begin. The girls started strong with just a loss at the number 4 position before winning both doubles and taking a 5-1 win. Even Natasha won a practice match whilst enjoying a few of the Zebra and Buffalo at the zoo which apparently affected her concentration!! Team spirit was fantastic and the girls then took on South Wales in the doubles. Connie battling with knee injuries meant Emily and Zulaikha, and Lucy and Hannah played the doubles to start this match. Lucy and Hannah had a tough match and the new pairing of Zulaikha and Hannah played brilliantly together to help us get a 1-1 start.
Day 2 was the continuation of our match against South Wales, Zulaikha battled at 3 but lost after a hard fought match, and then Hannah stepped up at 4 to get a great win with a third set tiebreak 14-12! This enabled Lucy and Connie to go on knowing we just needed 1 of the 2 to take it to the shoot out! Both girls went on very relaxed and played brilliantly giving us a 4-2 win over South Wales and a shot at the final on Monday! Their matches were finished by 12 and we took a trip to Watergate Bay to play on the beach! We found ourselves at the national surfing competition as well as surrounded by plenty of kite surfers, music on the beach, ideal set up for the girls to develop their “selfie” portfolio!!!! We played a bit of beach cricket, had hot chocolates and had an awesome afternoon away from the tennis!
Day 3 the girls were fresh after bargaining their bed time with the fact that they would get a whole other weekend together if they won and went to bed at a decent time!! They came out with loads of energy against Cambridgeshire winning at positions 4, 3, and 2 and just one loss at 1 against a tough opponent. Connie came out to rest her knees and we went for Zulaikha and Emily at 1 and Hannah and Lucy at the number 2 pairing. Both doubles played brilliantly with Cambridgeshire fighting to go to a shoot out resulting in 2 wins and a conclusive 5-1 victory in the final!!
The girls were an absolute pleasure. This team has Great Spirit, fight, positive energy, and were all ready to compete every time they stepped on the court. Thank you for all the effort you girls put in, you were a fantastic representation of the county and we were extremely proud of you!!!
