The Meme Griffiths Award is awarded to a Bucks volunteer who has given exceptional service to Bucks tennis.
The 2011 Meme Griffiths Award was presented to Margaret Wilson:
Margaret Wilson is a 'can do' person. Amiable, efficient, unflappable, kind, patient, thoughtful, practical, reliable. There are many more adjectives one could use - and every single one would be complimentary.
Quoting from the Bucks LTA 1993 Official Handbook:
"I can confidently predict that Bucks will make great progress on the Short Tennis (now Mini Tennis) front in the hands of Margaret Wilson. She lives in Haddenham where she has had long-term experience in administering what is now a thriving tennis community. A classic progression has taken place in less than ten years: ST introduction in school hall and classes started. ST classes expand to village hall. Two tennis courts constructed and village club formed. Third tennis court constructed. Floodlights added to all three courts. Tennis club helped to resuface two school courts, which gave extra club capacity when necessary. It is a wonderful success story." (I am sure Margaret would acknowledge Bev's assistance in founding Haddenham TC).
A number of successful juniors came out of the Haddenham Club to represent the county and win County Closed junior titles (such as David Webley, Nicolas Oakes, Emily Weller). At least one, James Woodwards, is a tennis coach now.
Margaret was on the County's Short Tennis sub-committee member from 1987, taking over the Chair and becoming a Bucks LTA Councillor in 1993. She has since served on sub-committees for Juniors, Performance & Development, Competitions and Tournaments. Chairman of the Junior County Closed Tournament for the past four years. In important early years of Bucks Indoor Tennis Centre was employed as a receptionist.
A valued member of the Executive Committee since it was instigated. An Editor of Tiebreaker magazine for all 17 colour editions since March 2006 (17th is in production now).
A prestigious award given to a very worthy volunteer.
