Downend & Frenchay Tennis Club is on the move!

Thursday, December 11, 2014

After 125 years on the 2 court Cleeve Hill site, Downend & Frenchay Tennis Club (formally Downend & Fishponds) has been awarded funding to relocate their tennis courts.  Work has begun to build 4 state of the art floodlit courts on land at Frenchay Cricket Club ground.

The Club Committee has worked tirelessly to raise £300,000 to ensure the future of their club.  Along with the LTA investment of £140,000 through their Whole Sport Plan grant award, further funding was received from Sport England (Inspired Facilities), Cory Environmental Trust & South Glos new homes bonus funds.

The newly renamed club of Downend & Frenchay hopes to open their new courts in the spring in time for the Great British Tennis Weekend in May.

Colin Corline, LTA Facility Manager for the South West said “The relocation and expansion of the club to Frenchay Cricket Club will allow them to grow the membership at the club and increase numbers of people accessing the coaching programme at the club.  The improved facilities and higher profile locally will ensure that the club meets the LTA target to increase participation in tennis and get more people playing more often.”

The club hopes their improved facility will encourage more people to get involved in the game.  The clubs offers a wide range of junior & adult coaching programmes as well as opportunities for social & competitive play.
