Teenage tennis players from the academy, based at the University of Bath, won both the boys’ doubles and the girls’ doubles titles at the Mombasa International Junior Championship.
Seventeen-year-old Scott Clayton and 16-year-old David Fox were unseeded for the tournament but ran out comprehensive 6-1, 6-1 winners over Kenya’s Ismael Ruwa and Poland’s Julian Turosienski, who were seeded four, in the final.
Seventeen-year-old Alicia Barnett and 15-year-old Brigit Folland were also unseeded for the women’s doubles but saw off three seeds Nikita Dawda (Kenya) and Britt Geukens (Belgium) in the quarter-finals before recording a 6-4, 6-4 over Kasandra Kozub (Poland) and Anastasiya Shestakova (Ukraine) in the final.
Barry Scollo, director of the TeamBath Tennis Academy, said: I'm really pleased for both pairs this will help their rankings for bigger events later in the year and build their experience on the doubles court.
“Doubles is not always a high priority with junior tennis but vital for learning certain skills that develop well rounded players, I hope they can do the same at their next tournament in Nairobi.”
It is the latest success for TeamBath Tennis Academy players following Andrew Willis’ singles triumph in the recent Aegon British Tour on his home courts at the University of Bath Sports Training Village. Another Academy player, Sam Murray, was runner-up in the women’s competition.
The TeamBath MCTA Tennis Academy is one of the LTA’s four International High Performance Centre’s and is based at the University of Bath Sports Training Village. It offers a complete range of tennis from mini tennis for kids, recreational tennis through to performance tennis.
