Backwell Student Teaches Tennis in Uganda

Monday, January 09, 2012

Backwell student, Lewis Vincent, joined the charity ‘Volunteer Uganda’ for six weeks in Kanungu District, Uganda.  He spent his time teaching Maths & English in local schools to children aged 8 to 17. Thanks to a generous donation of tennis equipment from Ben Tilling, Backwell Tennis Club Professional Coach, he was also able to coach the Ugandan children in basic ball skills and tennis shots. Even though the children had never seen tennis rackets before, they were keen to learn and join in. A 100 plus excited children surrounded the coaching sessions and Lewis found it a very  rewarding experience and enjoyed seeing the children  having fun and learning new skills.

Ben Tilling donated the equipment to ‘Volunteer Uganda’ so future volunteers can continue to coach tennis to local children. The charity and Lewis appreciated his generosity and who knows, it may not be too long before we see a Uganda tennis player at Wimbledon.
