Bristol is set to go tennis crazy ahead of Wimbledon Championships

Thursday, June 12, 2014

On the eve of Wimbledon, as the world’s greatest tennis players gather in the capital, families across Bristol will be given the ultimate chance to get involved in the excitement and build up to The Championships when the second in a series of four free ‘Great British Tennis Weekends’ smashes into town on Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd June.  The first of the weekends on the 17th & 18th May saw hundreds of families across the area grabbing the opportunity for free tennis events as tennis fever truly began to grip the nation.

People right across Bristol will take part in Cardio Tennis, Mini Tennis, disability tennis and tennis coaching – all completely free as part of the LTA and Tennis Foundation’s drive to get more people playing more often. Venues will provide rackets and balls, enabling those that attend and have never tried playing tennis before to get involved straight away and not be limited by their ability, age or experience.

The second of the ‘Great British Tennis Weekends’ continues to ramp up a summer of tennis fever with two more Great British Tennis Weekends taking place through June and July as follows:

Saturday 28th – Sunday 29th June
Saturday 19th – Sunday 20th July

Julie Jones, LTA Regional Tennis Participation Manger said: “It’s great to see the amount of local people who are grabbing a racket and getting involved. People of all ages and abilities, young and old, parent and child, are all taking this opportunity to hit up their local court for a wide variety of fun and free tennis activities.  With Wimbledon right around the corner and the excitement around the event palpable, there’s no better time to get down to your local park or club in Bristol and get involved in these fantastic events”.

Participating venues offering free tennis this weekend include:

  • Bristol Lawn Tennis & Squash Club
  • Clifton College Indoor Tennis Centre
  • Fry Tennis Club
  • Greville Smyth Park
