The Queens Baton Relay visited Bristol yesterday as part of the countdown to the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow this summer.
The Baton, carried by four local sporting heroes, is the Commonwealth Games version of the Olympic torch and carries a sealed, secret message written by the Queen.
Bristol's Millennium Square, Anchor Square and Amphitheatre was transformed into a sports park for the day.
Tennis was a main feature and provided free taster sessions to 3,000 school children in the afternoon. In the evening the park was opened to the public and local businesses and people from the local community had an opportunity to show off their tennis skills.
The tennis coaching team worked hard to provide lots of fun games and activities and the court saw some action from local tennis stars, James Vincent, form Ashton Park School and Claudia Hallsworth, from Cathedral School as well as Team GB Olympic Gold Rowers, Heather Stanning and Helen Glover.
One of the highlights came at the end of the day when the Baton came onto court.
Julie Jones the LTA Regional Tennis Participation Manager said “the Queens Commonwealth Baton Relay provided tennis with a great opportunity to showcase the sport and demonstrate how easy it is to get involved. It also provided the team with a chance to promote further FREE tennis taster sessions that are being delivered across the city this summer through the Great British Tennis Weekend campaign."
