Tuesday, May 22, 2012

Last weekend, 25 people from the tennis fraternity at Writhlington took part in a fund raising afternoon to raise money for the performance players from the coaching programme to go on tour to Torquay grade 3 tournament this year.

The idea of ‘What a Racket’ was that of Patrick Lodge, senior performance coach at Writhlington whose planned and run the event ably assisted by the young players.

Said Patrick ‘this is a really excellent format with 4 racket sports being played on a round robin system, the 4 sports were played were Mini Tennis (sponge ball), table tennis, badminton & full court tennis.  The age range for the participants was from 11yrs to 70 years, with Grandpa Jim playing.

Jim is the granddad of Ryan Guy one of the performance players and said ‘this is a wonderful opportunity for me to join in with my grand children; I am privileged to still have my health that I can run around still and play’.

The overall winner was Jon Doel with Hamish O Mahony (aged 14 yrs) runner up.

The event raised nearly £200.00 for the tour fund, the next event is a bag packing afternoon at a local supermarket plus running the raffle for the annual Club Championships which the Tennis Supporters Committee have agreed to as their way of supporting these young people.
