The Post 16 students took part in a in-house tennis tournament last Friday lunchtime. The event was organised and played by students currently studying at Writhlington’s Post 16 centre.
George Beechener and Jack Greenwood were the main organisers and refereed the event, along with Alex Hull and Sid Lethbridge. The student organisers are qualified tennis coaches and are heavily involved with Writhlington Tennis Club and it’s setup. The event was funded by a grant from the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA), which Writhlington Tennis Club received to promote tennis to students over the age of 16.
There was a great turn out, with all 8 courts being used by 20 doubles partners during the heats. Many other students came down to support the competitors, creating an electric atmosphere around the tennis courts. The tournament consisted of 4 round robin heats that were followed by quarterfinals and semi-finals.
The hard contested final was between Callum Jennings and Ciaran O’Shea in year 12 vs Oliver Brown and Tom Camacho in year 13. All competitors and other supporters chose to stay to the end of lunchtime to watch the tense and highly competitive final. Congratulations to Ciaran and Callum who won the tournament and £15 worth of iTunes vouchers.
‘The tournament was brilliantly organised by Jack Greenwood and George Beechener and it was a pleasure to give up my lunchtime to spend it with the students. Everybody enjoyed themselves and it really brought all the Post 16 students together. They all asked if there would be more events like this throughout the year and were keen to get involved in organising future events.’ commented Mr Burr Director of Post 16.
