Saturday 17 May 2014 saw UWE Centre for Sport throw its doors open for its annual Family Fun Day. As part of this day, Pete Caseley from Downend and Fishponds tennis club ran a ‘Family Time’ session as part of the ‘Great British Tennis Weekend.’ We had 163 adults and children attend the day, with a large percentage taking part in short tennis, some for the first time. Pete provided participants with hints and tips on the game and how to improve their play.
We hope that some of the individuals engaged may go along to the club. We also aim to run a tennis xpress course as part of UWE Social Sport programme, in partnership with Downend and Fishponds TC to engage potential players and feed them into his club. As we have no tennis courts on site, it is essential for our sport offer to be able to signpost individuals to a local club.
Pete was supported by ‘EDGE’ volunteers – UWE students undertaking the EDGE sports volunteering programme. They also learnt a lot as leaders, not only about the game but how to engage different ages within the game.
We received excellent feedback about the day, with tennis being mentioned specifically. We look forward to being involved in the Great British Tennis Weekend again next year.
