Playing Northants 1st, the girls got off to a great start winning 4-0. Eilish Mackie, Stella Gordon, Sophia Rolt and Alice Taylor all won their respective matches easily.
The boys didn’t get off to as good as start, both Tom Hands and Chad Richard losing to go 0-2 down before CJ Kindred and Tom Fleck, both last minute replacements won to make it a point each and a 2-2.
Next up was Staffordshire, and Mackie lost at number 1 before Gordon made it 1-1. Rolt lost a close tiebreak before Taylor won to make it a 2-2-2 draw. The boys were playing a strong Staffs team and Tom Hands got beaten in straight sets, before Chad Richard won a very long and tough tight two setter. CJ Kindred couldn’t repeat his performance from his first match and lost out 4-10 in the match tiebreak before Fleck lost to make it a 1-3 loss.
Going in to the last match with Norfolk, it was all to play for. For the girls, the winner would probably top the group and it proved to be just that. Mackie, Gordon and Rolt all lost before Alice Taylor won hers to make it a 1-3 loss.
It was a different story for the boys who whitewashed them with a 4-0 win. Hands and Fleck both winning their first matches of the day and were backed up by Richard and Kindred who both won their 2nd matches of the day.
Overall it meant it was very tight in both groups but the girls came out 2nd overall by a set and the boys ended up 3rd by having one less set.
The result didn’t matter too much as Cambs had already been promoted back up to division 2a next year.
