Thursday, April 13, 2017

The Cambridge Easter Tournament held at the Cambridge LTC Club had a record entry of 280 players and over the course of the week and 471 matches were played with players ranging from 8 and under through to Men’s and Ladies Open.

Local players to impress during the week were Yujiro Onuma (16 and under) Kira Reuter (Ladies Open), Lydia Sivirentsava (14 and under), Weiqi Ye (12 and under), Seth Briggs Williams (12 and under), and two 8 year olds Leo Runciman and Bibiana Krall.

The tournament was blessed with good weather for the majority of the week as there was a hectic schedule of 471 matches played over the 7 days.

The tournament attracted a record entry of 280 players from all around the country.

In the Ladies Open Kira Reuter won the singles event beating Norfolk’s Frances Evans 6/2, 6/1 in the final. The Men’s event was won by Suffolk’s Ed Pomeroy who also plays at Hills Road. He beat Will Cooke Wharton 6/2, 6/4 in the final.

The younger age groups were where the Cambridgeshire players dominated more. Yujiro Onuma, a member at the Cambridge Club played extremely well in the final of the 16 and under age group to beat a feisty Luc Woodall from Avon 6/4, 6/4 in the final. The tennis was of a high standard and the match very competitive.

Lydia Sivirentsava, seeded three in the 14 and under event beat the top seed Maddie McLoughlin in the semi finals 6/2, 7/5 and then beat Nina Sherwen 6/2, 7/5 in the final – this was an excellent result for Lydia.

The 12 and under events were dominated by the Cambridgeshire players as top seed Weiqi Ye beat Leicestershire’s Emily Pollard 6/2, 7/5 in another quality final. In the boys 12 and under event top seed Seth Briggs Williams was pushed all the way by Cambridge Club player Ted Hope (seeded 4) and eventually won 6/4, 6/7 and then 10-5 in the match tie break. This match ebbed and flowed one way and then the other.

The 8 and under events played with the red ball were dominated by Cambridgeshire players Leo Runciman and Bibiana Krall. Leo won the boys event and Bibiana her first tournament winning the girls event.

There was also a lot of interest in the doubles events where the best results were in the 18 boys’ doubles where Nick Ghaznavi partnered Ed Pomeroy to win the final beating Cambridgeshire’s Yujiro Onuma and James Murphy 6/4, 6/3 in the final. In the 14 and under boys final Zach Cox and his Norfolk partner Freddie Withers narrowly lost to Scott Whiting and Ben Stanford 6/7, 6/4 and then 10-6 in the match tie break.

Referee Sue Rich was very pleased with the Cambridgeshire performances and excellent numbers at the tournament – well done to all those who played.
