The first David Lloyd Cambridge Open Tournament in association with Turners Toyota was a great success with nearly 100 adults competing in both singles and doubles events during the week of 27 July to 1 August 2009. The standard was extremely competitive with many close matches making each evening both exciting and enjoyable to watch.
In the Ladies Singles, Georgina Jackson and Laura Taylor successfully negotiated their way through to the main draw, with Georgina capping an excellent week by first beating Laura in the Ladies Singles B Final and then beating Sara Matta in the Ladies Singles Final. Tennis East Administrators Louise Penny and Emily Davidson took the Ladies Doubles title with victory over Sara Matta and Yasmin Mughal.
In an extremely well attended Mens event, Daniel Mortlock, Paul Hodgson, Tom Hands and Ian Williamson successfully moved through the first qualifying draw, with Ian beating Daniel in the Mens Singles C Final. In the Mens Singles B section, Jonny Branagh and Rowland Coombes qualified for the Mens Tableau event with Rowland winning the Mens B title against Jonny on the finals day. After a very strong Mens draw, Nabil Litim and Rob Ellis made it through to the Mens Final, with Nabil edging out Rob in a classic match.
The whole week was well supported, including the finals day. A special mention must be made to the tournament referee, Alison Hands, who helped run a smooth and enjoyable event. David Lloyd Cambridge looks forward to welcoming everyone back next year.
