Cambridge Summer Open

Thursday, August 02, 2012

The Cambridge Summer Open supported by SORTA-CASE Ltd had a fantastic entry of 240 players from all around the Country who came to the Cambridge Club last week to play in the most fantastic weather of the Summer.

There were 40 boys and 29 girls competing in the 9 and under event alone!

Pride of place for the local Cambridgeshire players goes to Chad Richard who won both the 16 and 18 and under boys singles. Chad was seeded second in the 16 and under event and faced top seed Ben Clark, also from Cambridge in the final. Chad took the first set 6/2 and was leading 2/0 in the second when Ben had to retire through injury.

In the 18 and under event Chad was unseeded and beat third seed Rhan Abel (Suffolk) in the quarter finals 2/6, 6/2, 6/2 and then beat Toby Nicholson(Herts)  in the semi-finals 6/1, 6/3 and then in the final beat fourth seed Stephen Harlow (Norfolk) 6/1, 6/3.

Chad was unable to take all three titles as he and Ben Clark lost the 18 and under boys doubles final to Tom Hands and C-J Kindred 6/3, 6/4 (both from Cambridgeshire).

Natalie Bacon (Cambridge) beat top seed Stella Gordon (Cambs) in the 18 and under semi-final 4/6, 6/2, 7/5 and then had to play Elif Gabb from Staffordshire in the final. Elif unfortunately when playing her 16 and under final against Florence Abbott (Kent) pulled a hamstring and was unable to play Natalie in the final so Natalie got a walk over.

Aisha Brown had her first success in a Grade 3 tournament winning the 12 and under girls event beating Katherine Barnes from Norfolk 6/2, 6/2.

Cambridge Club’s Felix Dean won the 8 and under mixed event beating Joshua Lim (Herts) 10/3. Harry Wendelken had a good tournament narrowly losing to Sam King (Essex) 4/1, 3/5, 11-9 in the final of the boys 10 and under event. Other local Cambridge Club success was for Lui Murton and Rory Dixon in the boys 14 and under doubles as they beat Charlie James and Charles Petrie 6/7, 6/4 10-7 in the final.

The winners for each event were:

8 and under mixed – Felix Dean (Cambs)

9 and under boys – Max Graham (Northants)

9 and under girls – Isabelle Eaton (Suffolk)

10 and under boys – Sam King (Essex)
